Tubby is a very friendly, obedient dog, unfortunately he has limited feeling in his hind legs due to a fall that occurred about a year ago. I took him to an emergency animal hospital who referred me to the Veterinary Neurology CenterOne in Tustin, Orange County, CA, (949) 784-8703, in case someone would like to see his MRIs. Diagnosis was “Tubby had multi-level intervertebral disc herniations and an abnormal region of hyperintensity (brightness) in the spinal cord.” I could only assume that he preferred to survive even with diminished quality of life. I’ve been caring for him since that time but due to recent circumstances I can no longer tend to him.
I believe that with the proper attention, it’s possible for him to use his hind legs again. The neurologist confirmed that he can feel his hind paws but I think the lack of use has resulted in lack of confidence and muscle in his hind legs. I know that when I’ve had time to work with him, he would show improvement and try to hobble on all four legs, especially when he goes to a park. I haven’t lost hope in his ability to recover. He has a wheelchair. He is a miniature pincher mix, about 7 years old, around 15 pounds. He is neutered and up to date on shots.
Tubby also likes to "talk" to people and will respond with cute pup noises when spoken to. While initially he barks at strangers, he is a very friendly dog and loves showing his love to people by licking them. Tubby is very obedient and has never bitten anyone, has walked off-leash and always returns when called, and gets along well with anyone. While it is heartbreaking to say goodbye to such a loving member of the family, I no longer have the means to care for him. Tubby needs someone who can give him a lot of attention, encouragement to use of his hind legs, and make sure that he doesn't hurt himself by dragging his legs on hard surfaces. Despite his accident, Tubby is still a happy and excited dog, especially when given love from people. While primarily an outdoor dog, Tubby has spent time indoors. He can't always control going to the bathroom due to his legs, but he doesn't chew things or go into the trash can. Best thing for him would be grassy backyard and a pillow.
He also has a sister, Ruby, who my acquaintance is able to keep. However, whoever adopts Tubby is welcome to Ruby as well in case the new owner prefers to keep them together. She is a golden lab mix, about 8 years old, about 50 pounds, so they’ve been together pretty much their whole lives. Typical lab family dog traits, friendly, loves kids, never bitten anyone.
